Week 4

Monday, September 17

During our author's purpose activity, I enjoyed the conversations going on among the groups.  Some of you were not sure if the author's purpose was to persuade or inform.   Curtis supported his reasoning behind the self help book stating its purpose was to persuade.  Delvon brought up a good point regarding the example of Lil Wayne and Eminem's video on bullying.

I overheard some of you saying that you struggle with this skill.  We will have more opportunities to practice and review .Reviewing is an important part of learning.  By doing so, you become aware of the things you are sure of and those you are unclear.  That is why I had you write down what you already know about the skills we have covered in class so far.  If you can express your knowledge either in verbal or written form, you are confirming your understanding on the concepts.

As we try to wrap up our first unit, we reviewed many things.  We checked Chapter 2 in our vocabulary book and carefully looked at each sentence to determine what types of clues (context clues) we can use to determine the meaning and use of words.  Also, we examined how parts of speech can be distinguished in a sentence, and talked about how suffixes change the part of speech of a word.  The root word zeal was written down in your notebooks and the derivations of that root word: zealous and zealot.  In your notebooks, you also began a chart displaying word parts, their definitions, and examples.

In the Engage textbook, we reviewed several concepts. One was the denotative and connotative meaning of words in which we examined the positive and negative connotations of words and how identifying this can lead us to the author's tone and bias.  On page 111 and 112, a quick review of Chapter 2 was discussed.  I picked up Wednesday's assignment to identify, if any, skills that still need to be reviewed on Friday before the exam.  Your maps will also be an insight to what still needs to be covered before Monday's exam. I'm looking forward to seeing your maps on Friday.

Our class time today was used to review, practice, and apply our learning.  Our gallery walk was sweet.  I enjoyed how each of you looked at the display of learning maps, some more intense then others.  We saw how creative others can be.

The layout of Unit 1 Exam was explained.  On a separate sheet of paper, you will be asked  to use your own words to define everything that is on Unit 1 Exam Study Guide.  In addition, you will have a passage to read and apply the SQ5R strategy to the reading.  To further add on, you will be asked to support your reasoning which means to explain where you found the answer and why you choose the answer that supports your answer choice.
