Week 6

Monday, October 1

This morning started with another clip from The Walking Dead.  Mostly everyone had that yellow-greenish skin tone and a somewhat distant look.  If you were to be walking in the hallway, onlookers would think our class was creating MDC's version of Michael Jackson's video, Thriller.

Once everyone's blood started flowing, I began to see everyone's normal skin color start to reappear, and therefore, we began our day.  Entrance slips and learning maps were passed back to you, analysis of competencies forms were given to you so you can keep the pink copy in your notebooks to track your progress, and vocabulary homework was reviewed.  Students in one of my classes mentioned a song that includes the phrase "side by side" and the word "juxtapose" (one of my many favorite words).

We began Unit 2- Chapter 3 Topic and Main Idea in Engage by SQ5Ring the chapter and turning each heading into questions.  Some of you wrote them on post its, others wrote in their books, and a few of you used a sheet of paper.  This is a great practice that you want to keep in your repertoire of study skills that contains a plethora of benefits. Before we answered the questions, another study skill was introduced - Cornell Notes.

As many of you were packing to leave class, I rushed to the door before you were able to exit and asked each one of you questions related to what we covered in class (just a few minutes before or actually seconds before).  To both yours and my dismay, many of you were stumped by not being able to answer the question.  Why? What would work for you in order to help retain the information covered in class?

Wednesday, October 3

Less zombies today!  Could it be because many of you were preparing for the three-chapter vocabulary quiz?  I think that played a huge role.  Before the quiz, we talked about how the exit quiz you had on Monday helped in recalling what was covered in class that day.  We also continued answering the questions to the headings of the chapter and look at some examples. Since we were on a mission, we then reviewed the vocabulary words for Chapter 3 by completing in groups "Final Check" on pg.19 before taking the three-chapter vocabulary quiz.  How do you think you did on the quiz?  On a scale from 1 - 5, how difficult did you find the quiz?
